While not as bad as earlier Age of Wonders games, I can see how the warlord has an unfair advantage due to raw numbers that anyone can benefit from no matter what play style they have. Here, the warlord 50% more experience conqueror just make any hero level faster.
It's harder to build a doomsday hero in Age of Wonders 3, but it's still very possible with good item drops, and it can be difficult to counter, since you must build your entire empire to counter such ridiculous heroes. Yes, you could get undead reaper, incarnates, etc out, but you've to do that to counter them. For example, defense focused heroes kill everything, and orc warlord spam isn't easy to deal with. Previous Age of Wonders games have problems where straight forward buffs are difficult to counter. Sure the global spell double spell casting, but it doesn't have persistent gold medals of Global assault. You normally can only get more spell casting point by building the expensive grand temple.
